Ulysses' Shelter: building writers-in-residence network

organizes literary residences for young writers, translators and editors. The project began at the end of 2018 in three locations - Ljubljana, Larissa and Pomena on the island of Mljet, organized by Sandorf Publishing from Zagreb, in partnership with Slovenian Writers' Society (DSP) from Ljubljana and publishing house Thraka from Larissa. Each resident spends three weeks at each location from December 2018 to October 2019. The network of partners has since extended to include Literary Association Krokodil from Belgrade, Literature Across Frontiers from Wales, Inizjamed from Malta, Culture Reset from the Czech Republic, and Mallorca Film Commission from Spain. The idea of the project is to bring together artists from around the world and expose the creative potential of various European locations. Tovar.hr is the main means of informing about the Ulysses' Shelter project - about the residents, their work, and events within the project (readings, workshops, conferences and social events with residents).

Conversation with Gabriel Schembri - Past Experiences of Ulysses' Shelter Residency

On January 17, 2025, an online video conversation was organized between Gabriel Schembri as a current resident of Ulysses’ Shelter on Mljet, and past residents from different European countries, who shared their experiences of the Mljet residency with Gabriel and the project organizer Ivan Sršen. The past residents gave Gabriel their insights into staying on Mljet, along with some tips where to go and which of the island sites to visit. The participants were: Maša Senečić (Serbia, stayed in Ulysses' Shelter in March 2021), Laura Torres Bauza (Spain, stayed in January/February 2024), Jelena Žugić (Serbia, stayed in February/March 2024), Christos Armando Gezos (Greece, stayed in December 2018), and Aljaž Koprivnikar (Slovenia, stayed in August 2019).
